Balthasar Ress on Tour December 2013

Yet given the country's climate and cuisine, our fruit-driven Rieslings certainly have potential in this market in the future. Basically, German wine is increasingly popular there. We've noticed this for quite a number of years, not least because Balthasar Ress wines have been listed on Singapore Airlines from time to time, and from there, they fly the world over.

His next stop was Hong Kong, one of the few but enormously interesting markets for lusciously sweet German rarities. Clemens met the sommelier of the "Goldin Group," a very welcome guest at the world's leading wine auctions. The group recently made a name for itself through the purchase of the Bordeaux estate Château Le Bon Pasteur. The absolute highlight of the stay in Hong Kong was doubtlessly our importer's presentation at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Here, in a breathtaking, open-air setting, some 200 guests could sample top-notch wines and enjoy an outstanding meal. In fact, wine and food were the focus of his two-day stay in Hong Kong. Particularly impressive was a luncheon at Above and Beyond, the rooftop restaurant of Hotel Icon.

The last stop: the Philippine Islands. Wine - primarily red wine - is drunk here, but interest in German Rieslings is growing. Clemens was very fortunate in terms of timing. He arrived shortly after the earthquake and departed prior to the devastating typhoon. Selling wine suddenly loses relevance against the backdrop of suffering and destruction the storm wreaked.
