Sensational Ratings in the U.S. Wine Magazine Wine Spectator
Once again the American wine trade publication Wine Spectator has bestowed excellent ratings on selected wines of Weingut Balthasar Ress. The 2003 Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese fetched a sensational 98 points (of 100 possible). "Super stuff," was the verdict of the Wine Spectator, "viscous and sweet, with a lightness and well-integrated structure keeping it all fresh and focused. There's definitely the spice and dried apricot of botrytis but also a fresh fruit and citrus element that makes it complex and interesting. Long, long finish." This wine is not available on the regular market.
The only possibility to acquire a few bottles of this liquid gem is at auction, on the 24th of September at 1:00 p.m., at the traditional autumn auction at Kloster Eberbach (Eberbach Monastery in the Rheingau). For the first time, the Hessian State Wine Domains will auction their top wines and rarities together with those of the private VDP estates (Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter, or Association of Geman Prädikat Wine Estates). These wines are exclusively available at auction and not available on the regular market. The Balthasar Ress 2003 Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese numbers among these wines, as well as the estate's 2003 Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen Riesling Spätlese. All wine lovers who attend can sample the majority of wines on offer - single-bottle lots, or "Unikate" excepted - and can bid, via brokers, for all wines on offer.
