Tell us a bit about your house.

 

Jürgen Bauer: We’re a local wholesaler located in Dormagen, exactly halfway between Köln and Düsseldorf.

 

We service the restaurant trade in the surrounding area, from the simple bar on the corner to gourmet dining establishments. Our warehouse in Dormagen also supplies our online shop. In 2014, we opened a branch in Berlin: Vinothek Berlin, a wine shop combined with a wine bar.

 

 

What role do you play in your company?

 

Jürgen Bauer: My responsibilities range from selecting wines to visiting our suppliers; selling wines to restaurateurs; and selling wines in our Vinothek Berlin. Of course, the most important function is pulling the right strings to hold everything together.

 

 

What do you particularly enjoy about working with wine?

 

Jürgen Bauer: Working with wine is a great pleasure because it invovles a lot of working with people. Whether it’s customers, guests, or vintners – there’s always a lot to discuss. For me, wine is a culinary highlight that can beautifully be combined with the culinary delights of dining.

 

 

How did your contact with Balthasar Ress come about and what do you like about our wines?

 

Jürgen Bauer: My contact with Balthasar Ress came about through numerous tastings of the estate’s wines at different events. In recent years, the Ress wines stood out more and more and their quality was convincing. So, I contacted the estate, was warmly received, and was able to gain insight into operations during a visit. After a comprehensive tasting of current vintages at the Ress wine bar in Wiesbaden, I was thoroughly convinced that we should add them in our portfolio. They offer consistent quality and good value for money, be it the basic, everyday wines or those in the middle class, and above all, the Grosse Gewächse (great growths).

 

 

What have you always wanted to tell us as a wine estate?

 

Jürgen Bauer: A very special highlight was the Rheingau Riesling Sekt we poured at the opening of our Vinothek Berlin. Without exception, comments were positive about this outstanding sparkling wine à la méthode traditionnelle produced exclusively from Riesling.
