High Scores for Balthasar Ress Rieslings

Remarkable Track Record

Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Schützenhaus Riesling Kabinett wines have ranked in the Wine Spectator categories "outstanding" or "very good" for nine out of the past ten years running. The 1997 vintage also achieved 90 points. "

I feel this is a remarkable track record for a Kabinett wine. Scores of 90 points and above are often awarded to Auslese wines or dessert wine rarities. It's important that our customers know that a well-made "simpler" wine can also score well with respected wine critics. After all, these are the wines for everyday enjoyment, particularly with meals.

Additional Favorable Ratings

Our estate's 2005 Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg Riesling Spätlese and 2005 "Von Unserm" Rheingau Riesling trocken also fared well with the tasting panel - 89 and 88 points, respectively - which is within the range of the Wine Specator category "very good...a wine with special qualities."

The Reviews

Bruce Sanderson, senior editor and tasting director of the magazine's New York office, reviewed the three Balthasar Ress Rieslings as follows:

2005 Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Schützenhaus Riesling Kabinett

90 Points

"Hints of petrol and almond give way to peach and creamy lemon flavors in

this ripe kabinett. More compact than many of its peers at this stage. Give

it time. Best from 2008 through 2018. 4,000 cases made. -BS"

2005 Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Engelmannsberg Riesling Spätlese

89 Points

"There are some candied fruit aromas? apple and peach? but this Riesling is

defined by its dry profile and mineral element. Nicely balanced, with a

juicy finish. Drink now through 2012. 150 cases made. -BS"

2005 Balthasar Ress "Von Unserm" Rheingau Riesling trocken

88 Points

"Lanolin, quince and almond aromas and flavors mark this dry Riesling.

Bracing and almost chalky on the finish, with a lingering power. Drink now

through 2010. 4,000 cases made. -BS"
