Balthasar Ress earns third grape cluster in German wine guide

The award acknowledges the estate’s ongoing efforts to achieve the highest quality possible and confirms that with its hard work in recent years, the Ress family and its team are on the right track. “We’ve had a small victory in one stage of our quest to deliver a reliable quantity of top-quality wines,” says estate director Christian Ress, “but there are many stages to go.”

In the words of the Gault Millau critics...
“We were already impressed with this large Rheingau estate’s collection last year, and it also mastered the difficult 2010 vintage quite well – reason enough to award the estate a third grape cluster (“very good”). In 2010, Christian Ress became the estate’s sole director of business operations and hired Dirk Würtz as his estate manager. Würtz, previously employed by the Robert Weil estate, also operates a small estate of his own in Rheinhessen and has made quite a name for himself as a wine blogger. The dynamic team deserves special praise for their bold move to continue vinifying many of their Rieslings in a dry style although this is at odds with the regional trend to produce wines with more residual sweetness. By moving the winery’s production into the facilities of the former local cooperative, Ress also has more possibilities to stage novel wine events – an additional plus for the estate.”
