The Art of Appraisals

Consumer interest in auctions is growing - and not only via eBay. Not all auctions are geared to bargain hunters. Some, such as the traditional VDP (Prädikat Wine Estates) wine auctions, appeal to those who are looking for something special - in this case, choice wines. Fine wine auctions are also increasing in popularity and are often more of a social event than a "dry" marketplace.

The Rheingau branch of the VDP will hold its traditional wine auction at Kloster Eberbach on Saturday, 22 September 2007.

 Pre-tasting:

22 September 2007, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Ticket: 20 Euro

Auction:

22 September 2007, from 1:00 p.m.

Ticket: 40 Euro (includes pre-tasting)

For all professionals and serious wine lovers the auction actually begins with the pre-tasting in the morning, when the majority of the wines can be sampled in quiet surroundings and at one's own pace. Indeed, during the "wet" auction in the afternoon, all wines except single-bottle offers and rarities are poured prior to bidding, but things must move along relatively quickly.

It would be a shame to miss the "tasteful" auction, although absentee bidding is, of course, possible. Nevertheless, the ambience within the ancient monasery walls can only be experienced firsthand. The finest wines of top growers come under the hammer. These are wines from classified sites, ranging from Kabinett through Trockenbeerenauslese. Most of the wines are from the newest vintage, yet every year they are supplemented by a few rarities.

Now it's up to you to join the bidding to secure your favaorite wine.

The following wines from our estate will be featured at this year's auction:

(Note: the number corresponds with the serial number in the auction catalogue.)

18) 2006 Rüdesheim Berg Rottland Riesling Spätlese

minimum bid: 13,50 Euro; bottle size: 750 ml; no. of bottles available: 180

40) 2006 Hattenheim Nussbrunnen Riesling TBA

minimum bid: 130,00 Euro; bottle size: 750 ml; no. of bottles available: 3

minimum bid: 65,00 Euro; bottle size: 375 ml; no. of bottles available: 6

This year, for the first time, you can pre-taste the wines in our Vinothek (Rheinallee 50, Hattenheim) every Saturday prior to the auction, effective immediately. To arrange to do so, please phone ahead or send an e-mail.

If you are interesting in bidding on our wines but cannot personally attend the auction, simply fill out the attached form and return it to us via fax. We will forward it to one of the wine brokers authorized to bid at the auction. He will bid on the wine(s) of your choice for you.
