WineBANKers were able to see for themselves at the wineBANKers’ table in late April. He conducted the evening with great poise as he explained his philosophy and presented his wines – always with an anecdote at hand. He told the audience, for example, that Riesling will do the trick if you forget to refill the windshield wiper fluid in winter. It’s rare to find a wine-grower of his caliber candid enough to tell such tales, but Philipp is not above doing so. The president of the VDP regional association in Rheinhessen is also an avid fan of the top-league German soccer team FC Bayern München and a member of the German wine industry’s soccer team “Weinelf” (wine eleven).

 

The tasting thoroughly convinced everyone that Wittmann wines stand for elegance and refinement. The basic, entry-level wines are crystal clear, have acidity, and are extremely easy to drink. The VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS from the Aulerde site strongly underscored the leading position of this estate in Germany. Wittmann had fetched the last twelve bottles of vintage 2012 from his treasure chamber just for the wineBANKers’ table. It was a tremendous wine – and a great compliment to the wineBANK.
