Keitum on Sylt
The vineyards of Weingut Balthasar Ress on the North Frisian island of Sylt lie on the northern outskirts of
the village of Keitum, some 10 meters (ca. 33 ft.) above sea level. This area is sheltered on three sides
by plant growth that guarantees optimal wind protection. The area open to wind - on the west side - ensures
sufficient air circulation. The vineyards are relatively flat and are adjacent to the tideland.
The outlook for successful viticulture in Keitum is thanks to an optimal microclimate with a high
number of sun hours (1,714 sun hours on Sylt compared with 1,587 sun hours in the Rheingau) and the
early ripening varietals Solaris and Rivaner.
