Erbacher Hohenrain
North of the old heart of Erbach lies the gently sloping (10% inclination), south-facing
site Hohenrain. Thanks to its exposure and incline, it absorbs sunlight until well into
the evening. The west side of the vineyard is bordered by a three-meter- or nearly
ten-foot-high wall that affords protection from the wind and helps retain warmth. In 1519,
the site was first mentioned as "wingart des reyngen" and in 1543, "am hohenreine". The
term "Rain" refers to a slope on the edge of a field. In this case, it allludes to the
site's location next to the vineyards of the neighboring village Kiedrich. The soils of
Erbacher Hohenrain consist of deep loess-loam and Tertiary marl.
