Balthasar Ress earns third grape cluster in German wine guide

One of Germany’s most highly respected wine guides – Gault Millau WeinGuide Deutschland – has just awarded the Balthasar Ress wine estate in Hattenheim a third grape cluster.

The award acknowledges the estate’s ongoing efforts to achieve the highest quality possible and confirms that with its hard work in recent years, the Ress family and its team are on the right track. “We’ve had a small victory in one stage of our quest to deliver a reliable quantity of top-quality wines,” says estate director Christian Ress, “but there are many stages to go.”

In the words of the Gault Millau critics...
“We were already impressed with this large Rheingau estate’s collection last year, and it also mastered the difficult 2010 vintage quite well – reason enough to award the estate a third grape cluster (“very good”). In 2010, Christian Ress became the estate’s sole director of business operations and hired Dirk Würtz as his estate manager. Würtz, previously employed by the Robert Weil estate, also operates a small estate of his own in Rheinhessen and has made quite a name for himself as a wine blogger. The dynamic team deserves special praise for their bold move to continue vinifying many of their Rieslings in a dry style although this is at odds with the regional trend to produce wines with more residual sweetness. By moving the winery’s production into the facilities of the former local cooperative, Ress also has more possibilities to stage novel wine events – an additional plus for the estate.”

In the wine reviews of the Gault Millau critics...
Fourteen Ress wines were rated, fetching up to 93 points on a 100-point scale:

The Gault Millau guides were founded by Henri Gault and Christian Millau in France. In addition to their annual restaurant guide, they’ve published the WeinGuide since 1993. Regarded as one of the most important reference works on German wine-growers and their wines, its critical assessments are updated annually and eagerly awaited by wine professionals and consumers alike. Release date is usually early November.

Our new price list is available. It’s not merely a list of products and prices printed on a piece of paper – it’s a little magazine. We went to great efforts in preparing the new list. It provides all kinds of information about our vineyard sites, our philosophy, and how we work.

We’ve put together a new “pRESSbook.” It’s available immediately as a pdf file or we’ll be happy to send you a hard copy. The pRESSbook is a compilation of the most important opinions, reviews, and critiques about us and our wines. Since the last one was issued, there have been quite a number of new “echoes” – we’re both proud and grateful for this and the fact that our wines have been held in such high esteem in recent years.
