Annual Harvest Report 2019

The 2019 harvest came to an end a few weeks ago now and the young wines are happily fermenting and maturing in stainless-steel tanks and wooden barrels in our cellar.

Although we couldn’t reach the equivalent capacity as in 2018 yield-wise, we are certainly more than satisfied with the accomplished quality. The young wines are already very promising and we look forward in anticipation, to presenting you our new vintage in just a few months from now.

During the spring and summer months the weather proved to be very similar to the last year. The absence of rain and extremely hot daily temperatures were our constant companions throughout the whole period of vegetation. Work in the vineyards had to be postponed to the early hours of the morning and our main objective during foliage management, was to reduce the danger of sunburn as much as possible.

The first days of the harvest in 2019 were used exclusively to harvest grapes for our base wines, determined both for our sparkling Riesling and sparkling Rosé Sekt. Low degrees of Oechsle and high acidity in combination with optimal physiological maturity are the necessary requirements for the base-wines in order to become our sparkling wines.

Following this initial harvest, we then concentrated on the Pinot Noir grapes for our red wines. Again, the focus is also on relatively high acidity, essential for our chosen ‘French Burgundy’ style.

Finally, on the 22nd September, the main Riesling harvest started. VDP.GROSSE LAGE Rüdesheim Berg Schlossberg was one of the first vineyards to be harvested, in which we attained only a small yield, but in reward, excellent quality with healthy and highly concentrated grapes of 96° Oechsle.

Then the rain came. Between the 22nd and the 29th of September it simply didn’t stop and the few dry periods we did have, we had to make the most of. This obviously meant that harvest planning was incredibly difficult and at times, having to be changed more than once daily. Unfortunately, the rain set in before the grapes reached their physiological maturity, so our main aim was to keep them on the vines and healthy, for as long as possible. Luckily for us, temperatures dropped during the night. So, despite permanent rainfall, the harvest was a success, if not slightly faster than perhaps originally planned.

On the 16th October, following four whole weeks of intense labour and hard work, we officially declared our harvest complete. For us, the autumn of 2019 will remain on record as exhilarating. Comparable perhaps with a somewhat nerve-wracking game of poker. One in which we certainly not only possessed but also played, the Royal Flush! We would like to thank our whole production team here at Balthasar Ress who, despite constantly facing new challenges, kept their goal in sight and always played the right cards at the right time!
